HEALTHY OVARIAN
OVARIAN CANCER
Ovarian cancer
Ovarian cancer affects the ovaries and is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in women globally. It primarily starts in the cells of the ovaries, with higher rates linked to factors like genetics, age, and hormone therapy.
Causes
It’s not exactly clear what causes ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer occurs when cells in the ovaries develop changes (mutations) in their DNA. The changes make cells grow and divide out of control. The accumulating abnormal cells form a tumor in the ovaries that can grow to invade nearby structures and spread to other parts of the body.
Signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer
- Abdominal bloating or swelling
- Quickly feeling full when eating
- Weight loss
- Discomfort in the pelvis area
- Changes in bowel habits, such as constipation
- Frequent need to urinate
Types of Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer is classified according to the type of cells involved. The type of ovarian cancer you have helps determine your treatment options. Types of ovarian cancer include:
Epithelial tumors
These start in the thin layer of tissue that covers the outside of the ovaries. About 90% of ovarian cancers are epithelial tumors.
Stromal tumors
These begin in the ovarian tissue that contains hormone-producing cells. These tumors are usually diagnosed at an earlier stage.
Germ cell tumors
These rare ovarian cancers tend to occur in younger women.
