MELANOMA
Melanoma
Melanoma is a severe form of skin cancer that begins in melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin, the pigment giving skin its color.
Causes
The exact cause of melanoma is not fully understood. Melanoma occurs when melanocytes mutate in their DNA, leading to uncontrolled cell growth and division. These cells form tumors on the skin, which can spread to other parts of the body.
Signs and symptoms of Melanoma
- Change in an existing mole
- Development of a new pigmented or unusual-looking growth
- Itching or pain in a mole
- Asymmetry, border irregularity, color variation, diameter over 6mm, evolving size, shape, or color
Types of Melanoma
Melanoma is classified by the involved cell types, which helps in treatment decisions. Types include:
Superficial spreading melanoma
The most common type, growing along the top layer of skin.
Nodular melanoma
Appears as a bump, grows quickly.
Lentigo maligna melanoma
Occurs in older adults, often on sun-exposed skin.
Nodular melanoma
The rarest form, found on palms, soles, and under nails.
