Cervical cancer
Cervical cancer affects the cervix, the lower part of the uterus. It is one of the most common cancers in women worldwide.
Causes
The primary cause of cervical cancer is infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). Cervical cancer develops when cervical cells undergo DNA mutations, leading to uncontrolled growth and division. These cells form tumors that can invade and spread.
Signs and symptoms of Cervical Cancer
- Vaginal bleeding after intercourse
- Bleeding between periods or after menopause
- Watery, bloody vaginal discharge
- Pelvic pain
- Pain during intercourse
Types of Cervical cancer
Cervical cancer is classified by the type of cells involved, which helps guide treatment. Types include:
Squamous cell carcinoma
The most common type, begins in the thin, flat cells lining the cervix.
Adenocarcinoma
Starts in the glandular cells of the cervix.
Other rare types
Includes small cell carcinoma and neuroendocrine tumors.
