Breast cancer
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide. It typically begins in the cells of the milk ducts or lobules in the breast.
Causes
The exact cause of breast cancer is not fully understood. Breast cancer develops when breast cells undergo DNA mutations, leading to uncontrolled growth and division. These cells form tumors that can invade nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body.
Signs and symptoms of Breast cancer
- A lump in the breast or underarm
- Change in the size, shape, or appearance of the breast
- Skin changes on the breast, such as dimpling
- Nipple discharge
- Pain in the breast or nipple
Types of Breast cancer
Breast cancer is categorized based on the cells involved, which helps determine treatment. Types include:
Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)
Non-invasive, confined to the milk ducts.
Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC)
The most common type, begins in the ducts and spreads.
Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC)
Starts in the lobules and spreads.
Triple-negative breast cancer
Lacks three common receptors, more aggressive and harder to treat.
